I was at an event where I heard two women, very young, having a discussion about how the best things are all already found – best food, best books et.

It was such a depressing thought. I disagree so much that I had to post about it.

Whenever someone asks me what my favorite spice is or what my favorite dish is, it always makes me pause. I have to say something so I pick from things I love but I always feel like I dont have a favorite yet because I have yet to try new things. I have yet to taste so much of what the world offers.

There is so much delight in this world. So much that is yet to be discovered.

This I believe -

1. The best book is yet to be written.

2. The best song is yet to be sung

3. The most glorious day, even better than your best day yet, is yet to come.

4. If you feel you couldn't be happier, i can guarantee you that you will be happier in days to come – the best isnt here yet. THe world lives on hope, on dreams and for miracles.

If all the best were already done, why would we want to live on?

I spent an evening this week listening to the amazing and super-famous Susan Orlean read from her books.

When asked what her favorite piece was, she said, "I dont think i have written it yet."

  1. Thanks for posting this, Monica. “If all the best were already done, why would we want to live on?” That’s a very good question.

I know it’s going to get better since I get to meet you at the food writing conference next week!

  2. I love that quote! “I don’t think I have written it yet.” Perfect.

  3. How true, Monica! Whenever I have thought
so in the past, I got inspired. Thanks for bringing
    on the inspiration…

  4. It’s a wonderful thought. Thanks for sharing this – it’s always good to read positive ideas.

  5. I agree, what those young women said is a depressing thought. I too don’t have a favorite — anything. I can’t even choose a favorite movie or musical artist or color for that matter. To pick a favorite food is just plain impossible. It depends what looks good today and that becomes my favorite.

  6. I have distinct favorites, especially in music. I look on those as part of good conversation with friends — always leads you in good directions and to new discoveries.

  7. Such inspiring words. Still I know how those women feel especially here on the internet. Sometimes I think I have a new idea and when I google it it is already there…..I like to think like this…..so it may old or already there but there is nothing stopping you from seeing it in a new way.

  8. Such an inspiring outlook on life! I didn’t even realize that I really needed to hear these words today until I arrived here and starting reading. Thank you much.

  10. Very inspiring! I agree – if you look throughout history, there are so many things we’ve improved upon. That’s not to say that there aren’t genius, amazing works throughout history – there are – but if we just stopped there, where would we be? I agree that the best is yet to come.

  11. Monica you always have a write up to cheer me up and make me ponder. Thanks!

  12. I agree with you too Monica. People have been saying for centuries–perhaps even millennia–that we’ve seen the best and that it’s all downhill from here. That in and of itself is laughably ironic.

But my view is, if you don’t see what you like in the world, work to change it. There’s no sense complaining about it, is there?

    Thanks for another thought-provoker.

  13. I have days where that might not seem the case but the truth is, I am a ‘glass is half full’ type and yes, even on the worst day, the effort to keep going is firmly built on the expectation that the next day will be better; that new experiences will bring fulfillment and laughter and joy. That the best is surely yet to come!
